Name:
Rev. Ken E. Brown

Title: Nationally appointed home missionary, DHM, President, Urban Outreach, Inc.

From: Ken was born in Fall City, Washington, and raised in nearby North Bend, a small town nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Raised without spiritual nurture, at the age of 15 when Ken gave his heart to Christ as a result of the 700 Club. During his senior year of high school, Ken received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and began to pray for God's direction in his life. Kathy and Ken have been married nearly 15 years and have four children; Jordan (12), Angelina (10), Seth (9) and Christina (6) The Browns raised an inner-city youth, Anton Jenkins, for 7 years; Anton is currently on staff with T. D. Jakes in Dallas, Texas.

Educational Background: Ken graduated from Mt. Si High School as student body president and valedictorian in 1978 and then attended Yale, graduating with a B.A. in history in 1982. Ken had plans to attend law school, but in response to four years of concerted prayer, Ken sensed a strong direction from God to lay down his plans for law and wait on God. During the next two years many powerful stones of pioneer missionaries that he had heard while at Yale began to return to memory. Ken began to devour missions biographies. By 1983 he determined God's will for his life was to carry the gospel to a people not his own - presumably in a foreign place.

Employment Background: The door God opened, however, was at Teen Challenge of Maryland, which included a bus ministry to inner-city kids and ministry opportunity in the newly planted Teen Challenge church, New Life Assembly. In 1986, Ken married Kathleen Zello. Ken developed a deep love for the urban children along his route, eventually taking several from crack houses into their home.

Spiritual Gifts: Leadership, vision, pioneering, compassion, encouragement and a love of people.

Ministry Preparation: In 1989, equipped with ministry credentials (Potomac District) and home missionary appointment with the Division of Home Missions of the Assemblies of God, Kathy and Ken began to lay plans to build a dynamic outreach upon the foundation of their bus ministry in some of Washington's most infamous housing projects.

Why Urban Outreach: By 1993 we had relocated from Maryland into Southeast Washington. In 1995 we incorporated our ministry in DC as Urban Outreach. In 1996 I completed the conversion of UO's signature outreach vehicle, the 24' Gospel stage truck. And, in 1996, in answer to specific prayer, a distressed 12-unit apartment building was donated to Urban Outreach-along the very route Ken drove for years. From 1998 to the present, our UO team has been renovating the Urban Outreach Center to fulfill the vision of establishing a beachhead for Christ in one of Washington's most devastated communities.

Why Urban Outreach: I attended church and served on the board with Ken Brown's father, Mary Brown, for 8 years, so I was aware of Urban Outreach for quite a while. It was when Ken came to speak at our church 2 summers ago, though, that the Lord first prompted me to come and help with the building. Last year I came to Urban Outreach to help for two weeks. I wanted to help work on the building, instead the Lord did a work on me. After the first week the Lord broke my heart for the people of Southeast Washington, DC. I remember breaking down crying for the Lord to do something for the people I had just met. He spoke to me saying, "Long before you cried, I cried, and long before your heart broke, Mine broke, now what are you going to do about it.?" He had given me His heart for the people of Southeast DC and the commission to be His hands and His feet here.
